3. Bankruptcy in mixed curling – Perret/Rios are still stuck – sport

contents

After the 5: 7 against Canada, the Swiss duo in Beijing can only catch up if they don’t want to write off the knockout phase in mixed curling prematurely.

After 2 defeats at the start of the Olympic tournament, Jenny Perret/Martin Rios were finally able to show a reaction against Great Britain. In retrospect, the 8:7 they fought for didn’t turn out to be a liberating blow. Because against the strong Canadian couple Rachel Homan/John Morris, the Swiss tandem fell back into the old waters.

After the 5:7 – the 3rd bankruptcy in the 4th game – the silver winners of the last Winter Games 2018 in Pyeongchang are really worried about progressing. In the round-robin phase with 9 matches for each nation, Perret/Rios only shared 9th place. Only pointless Australia is still behind them. Only the top 4 remain in the decision and can intervene in the fight for the medals.

A missing stone as the beginning of the end

The Swiss duo got off to a disastrous start against the “Ahornblatt” representation. Perret was not able to place her last stone in the house as intended in the 1st end because it was clearly too long (see video above). This mistake cost her and her partner dearly: Canada stole 3 stones and thus benefited from a comfortable lead.

Helplessness spreads

Jenny Perret and Martin Rios have so far owed a lot.

key stone

The annoying handicap could not be made up for until the end. After the 5th end, the pressure increased as Canada pulled away 6-2. As a result, Perret/Martin Rios were able to shorten the lead to 4:6 after winning 2 points from an end for the first time. But the stable opponent could no longer be harassed on the home straight.

Only wins help further

The Seelander and the Glarus come after 4 appearances within about 36 hours for a short breather. The two are next challenged against Sweden on Saturday morning (from 2:05 Swiss time in the SRF Olympic player).

After the botched start of the tournament in Beijing, victories are essential. And in contrast to the brief interim high against Great Britain, the next turnaround should be sustainable. Italy is currently right on course and tops the table with the maximum number of points – Switzerland has already played (and lost) against the leader.
