In mid-January 1987, extremely cold air masses lay over Central Europe. Together with a clear and windless night, the official cold record in Switzerland was reached: -41.8 degrees.

It wasn’t just in La Brévine that it got extraordinarily cold, the lows in the lowlands were also in the range of the recommended freezer temperature. For example, in Basel -23.3 degrees were measured that morning.

How cold it was on the morning of January 12, 1987 on the often very cold Glattalp/SZ, the Alp Hintergräppelen/SG or the newly “discovered” cold air lake on the Sägistalsee/BE was, one can only speculate.
