The clean-up work with twelve decontamination ships is already underway, the Shandong Provincial Maritime Security Agency said on Thursday in the online networks. The Panamanian cargo ship “Sea Justice” rammed the Liberian oil tanker “A Symphony” on Tuesday near the port in northeast China.
The incident occurred around 75 kilometers off the coast of Qingdao and caused an oil spill. Nobody was injured in the collision.
A government official described the leaked oil in the Chinese state newspaper “Global Times” as a “bitumen solution”. However, the exact content still has to be checked. Oil no longer leaks. “After the technical controls, the environmental impact should certainly be minimal,” the official was quoted as saying.
Qingdao is the Chinese port where the largest quantities of crude oil are unloaded. According to the authority, operations in the port can continue to operate normally regardless of the incident. However, they ordered that other ships must keep a distance of ten nautical miles (around 18.5 kilometers) to the scene of the accident.
