Major telecommunications equipment makers Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung Electronics and others saw sales decline last year. The reason ? Macroeconomic challenges, shrinking mobile network infrastructure market and reduced operator spending.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research and industry sources, Ericsson’s revenue last year was about $24.8 billion and Nokia’s was about $24.1 billion. .
Samsung Electronics reported sales of $2.9 billion, down about 30% from $4.2 billion a year earlier.
Open RAN continues to grow
So the 5G market has already reached its peak in 2022. And sales have been sluggish since last year.
If the explosion of sales of 5G phones in India was good news for equipment manufacturers last year, the Indian market began to slow down in the fourth quarter.
The outlook for revenue growth this year remains uncertain. Indeed, operators are cautious when it comes to equipment spending. However, demand in the open RAN market is still there.
Open RAN is a technology that allows RAN, a wireless access network, to be built with open standards so that manufacturers can interconnect different communications equipment.
Last year, Ericsson signed a $14 billion deal with US carrier AT&T in this area, and Samsung Electronics is also in the pipeline to sign major deals in this area.
