6.4 million downloads already: Corona warning app celebrates "strong start"

The more people who use the Corona Warning app, the more effective it is. Many Germans seem to take this to heart: within 24 hours, more than six million people press "Download". Health Minister Spahn hopes that many more will follow suit.

The federal Corona warning app has had a surprisingly high response at its launch. Since it was released on Tuesday morning, more than 6.4 million people have downloaded the app, according to the Federal Ministry of Health. "There are well over six million reasons why the corona virus has fewer chances in the future," said Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn. Everyone who uses the app makes a difference. "This strong start should motivate even more citizens to participate. Because curbing Corona is a team game."

The application is said to make tracking corona infections easier and faster. To do this, it measures whether mobile phone users have come closer than two meters over a long period of time. If a user has tested positive and has shared this in the app, it reports to other users that they have been near an infected person. Then you can have yourself tested voluntarily – even without symptoms – at checkout costs. Contact data is not stored centrally, but only on the smartphone.

The total cost of the app is expected to be over 69 million euros by the end of 2021. The Federal Ministry of Finance replied to a request from left-wing finance politician Victor Perli. According to the Federal Government, the development costs are around 20 million euros. These are paid to Deutsche Telekom and SAP.

Telekom will receive around 43 million euros for ongoing operations. This should cover the costs for the maintenance of the app, the operation of the server, the infrastructure, IT security, the network and the hotline by the end of next year. In addition, 3.5 million euros have been paid to the Carat agency for communication, according to the letter of June 15. The digital situation center is expected to cost just under three million euros.
