Two weeks ago, 15-year-old middle school student Yuriy was hospitalized in serious condition after being violently assaulted. Plunged into a coma for several days, he regained consciousness on Saturday 23 January. The teenager was kicked and punched but also with a baseball bat and crutches as he allegedly found himself in the midst of a settling of scores between rival gangs. The affair caused a stir in France and an investigation was quick to be opened.
This Sunday morning, nine young people including eight minors and one adult were indicted. Five of them were incarcerated for "assassination attempt", the other four were placed under judicial supervision. According to AFP, a sixth young person was also indicted for "complicity in an assassination attempt".
A judicial investigation was opened this Saturday asking for the indictment of the suspects, involved to varying degrees. "A judicial investigation was opened today on the counts of attempted assassination and complicity in the attempted assassination, participation in a criminal association with a view to preparing a crime and theft with violence resulting in total incapacity for work more than eight days ", declared the Paris prosecutor's office to theAFP.
A total of eleven young people, aged 15 to 17 and another aged 18, were taken into police custody. Three of them have been released without prosecution at this point. "They are suspected of having formed a group in order to prepare violent collective action against another group of people in reaction to a previous brawl " which occurred on January 10, also in the 15th arrondissement, which is itself the subject of a separate investigation, said Rémy Heitz, the Paris prosecutor.
According to Le Parisien, following his beating, Yuriy would suffer from a head trauma with several serious fractures of the skull, a hematoma between the brain and the skull and a cerebral contusion. He is said to have a broken nose, several thigh wounds and a broken finger.
