Whistles for the Chancellor, whistles also for the ministers: After Olaf Scholz, Nancy Faeser and Robert Habeck also felt the displeasure of handball fans at the European Championships in Berlin.
The European Handball Championship is not a good place for the top politicians of the traffic light government: First, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was a guest at the German national team’s second game against North Macedonia in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, endured a concert of whistling. Well, at the preliminary round final of the DHB team against France, Economics Minister Robert Habeck and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser were caught: The Green politician and the SPD politician were welcomed as guests of honor by the hall announcer during a break in the game – and by the 13,571 spectators in the sold-out arena loud whistles.
DHB sports director Axel Kromer had disappointedly commented on the whistles against Scholz, but they were not unexpected: “In general, it’s not nice for us at all when our guests are whistled at. But the last few weeks have shown that there is a general mood in Germany “There are reports that unfortunately these whistles did not make it unlikely,” said Kromer on Monday and added: “I was happy that we scored a goal relatively quickly so that we could focus on the sport.”
At the opening game of the European Championship, where more than 53,000 spectators created a world record crowd, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier received friendly applause – but then caused a smile with a bumpy opening speech: The SPD politician had invited the spectators to the “European Championship in English”. “Europe 2022” – before he corrected himself and ended his speech properly. The Prime Ministers Hendrik Wüst (in Düsseldorf) and Daniel Günther (in Berlin) were spared the loud protest.
