The banners that were shown in front of the Olympic Museum in Bern, Zurich, Lucerne and Basel as well as in Lausanne read “Boycott Beijing 2022” and “No Beijing 2022”, as the Zurich-based association announced.
Switzerland was one of the first countries to grant political asylum to Tibetan refugees, the statement said. She must now “show once more that she is in solidarity with the communities that are being oppressed by the Chinese regime”.
The association “Tibetan Youth in Europe” therefore calls on the Federal Council not to send any official representatives to the Olympic Games. Various governments have decided to boycott diplomatically because of concerns about the human rights situation in China, the statement said. For example, the USA announced that it would send athletes to the Games, but not diplomatic representatives.
The 24th Winter Olympics will take place from February 4 to 20, 2022 in the Chinese capital Beijing – unless the corona pandemic leads to a postponement.
