If we learned last week that Derek Chauvin, implicated in the death of George Floyd, was charged with manslaughter, the Minnesota Attorney General decided to toughen the charges.

Derek Chauvin, the police behind George Floyd's death, has been charged with second degree murder, the equivalent of willful manslaughter. Minnesota Democrat Senator Amy Klobuchar announced the decision on her Twitter account last night, Wednesday June 3. The senator added that the other three police officers would be prosecuted for complicity. Last week, we learned that Derek Chauvin was charged with manslaughter, which in the United States corresponds to second degree murder. The announcement had sparked general outrage within the anti-racist movement, with the majority of activists viewing the death of George Floyd as intentional homicide. Now charged with second degree murder, Derek Chauvin is punishable by 40 years.

Faced with this announcement, the family of George Floyd expressed themselves through a press release published by their lawyer: "This is an important step on the road to justice." In parallel, earlier today, Wednesday, June 3, the State of Minesotta said it was opening an investigation into possible discriminatory practices by the regional police over the past ten years.

Defense Secretary in the US government Mark Esper publicly opposed the option of deploying the US military to deal with protesters from the Black Lives Matter movement: " I am not in favor of declaring a state of insurrection. (…) The option of using active soldiers should only be used as a last resort and in the most urgent and dramatic situations. We are not in this kind of situation today. "

For the moment, a curfew system has been set up in Washington, and an important security system has been put in place around the White House to prevent access.
