Domestic violence: This chat gesture is a secret cry for help – video

Domestic violence is a terrible crime that is usually hidden behind closed doors and goes unpunished. Due to the corona crisis, the victims are in a particularly bad situation – because they are delivered to their violent partner around the clock and cannot easily flee to new accommodation.

Secret signal as a hidden cry for help

A Canadian women's rights organization now wants to raise awareness of a hidden signal that women can use to call for help even when their violent partner is in the same room. In the gesture, the thumb of one hand is wrapped in the other fingers and held in the camera during a video chat. In this way, nobody notices that the victim of abuse has sent an alarm signal – and the other chat participant can help. In the video you can see how exactly the gesture looks!
