Apple: an M2 chip in the making for the Mac Mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13

No sooner has the M1 Ultra been announced than rumors of upcoming Apple chip releases emerge. Thus, according to information from 9to5MacApple would already be working on the M2, a new iteration that would offer various improvements compared to the SoC M1 versions.

Thus, the M2 would be codenamed Staten and would be based on the architecture of the A15 chip of the iPhone. As a reminder, the SoC M1 is based on the A14. The M2 would be composed of 8 CPU cores with 4 high-performance cores called Avalanche and 4 efficient cores called Blizzard. 10 GPU cores would complete the entire M2 while the M1 makes do with 8 GPU cores. Apple would also announce in the process a Pro version equipped with 12 CPU cores with 8 Avalanche cores and 4 Blizzard cores.

On the performance side, we can therefore assume that the M2 will be between the M1 and the M1 Pro, the M2 being only an evolution of the M1 with optimizations and probably the switch to TSMC’s 4 nm engraving fineness. The Mac Mini would be one of the first products to take advantage of this new series of SoCs. Two variants of the small computer would be planned: the first, codenamed J473, would carry an M2 chip, while the second would take the name of Mac Mini Pro (J474) and would carry the M2 Pro.

As in 2020, Apple should not only launch the Mac Mini M2, but also a MacBook Air (J413) and a MacBook Pro 13, both with the new SoC M2. As for the official announcement, it is whispered in the ears of Bloomberg that the WWDC conference would be the ideal theater for such launches. See you next June to see more clearly.
