How to register to try to buy a PS5 from Sony?

If you still haven’t managed to get your hands on a PlayStation 5, Sony’s site will be your salvation! The Japanese firm has set up a raffle system to try your luck to buy a console at a normal price.

The PlayStation 5 remains a hard-to-find console. Nearly a year and a half after its release, Sony’s console remains desperately out of stock all over the internet and on store shelves. Blame it on a large demand and a shortage of semiconductors that prevents Sony from producing enough consoles to satisfy all of its customers. The situation is such that the Japanese firm has gone back to manufacturing PS4s so as not to put all its eggs in one basket. But that’s not all, the company has also set up an in-house site to register for “have a chance to buy a PS5 console“. Here’s how it works.

Where to register to try to buy a PS5?

Sony’s registration process couldn’t be simpler. Just go to the official page of the site, log in with your PlayStation account (the same one you use on your console) and click on the big “Register now” button that sits in the middle of the page. In one click, the registration is validated and your request is registered by Sony.

Am I sure I can buy a PS5 via the Sony site?

No, unfortunately, even if the Sony store makes it possible to avoid going through a reseller. This does not mean, however, that it is enough to register to have the opportunity to buy a PS5. Sony is indeed conducting a draw with all registrants as soon as stocks are available.

If you are selected, you will receive an email telling you a time slot during which you will have a chance to buy a PS5 “in the limit of the available stock”, says Sony. This means that even with an invite, you’ll need to be quick and efficient if you want to get your hands on a PS5 at a normal price.

What are the limits to be aware of?

In order to ensure that as many people as possible can buy a PS5 via this raffle system, Sony has implemented some limitations on its site:

  • There is no point in registering more than once with the same account since this “will not increase your chances of being selected”according to Sony.
  • You will only be able to purchase one console per account, either the standard version or the “Digital Edition”.
  • The chosen delivery address must be in a country where the store is officially available (United States, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Oceania, India or Russia).

Tips and tricks

The system put in place by Sony is intended to discourage the purchase of consoles in bulk and to fairly distribute the available stocks. There are, however, some basic tips to know if you want to increase your chances of leaving with a PS5 under your arm.

  • Make sure the email address on your PSN account is your primary address. Otherwise, you will have less chance of seeing the raffle email arrive.
  • Check that your payment method is up to date. If your credit card is properly linked to your account, you can save a few minutes on purchase and potentially avoid the stock shortage.
  • Finally, be patient. There is no guarantee that you will receive an email from Sony upon registration. This distribution channel complements the rest. If you absolutely want to get your hands on a PS5 as soon as possible, there are other techniques that we detail in our article and our dedicated video.
