Was Sandrine Rousseau overzealous? Activist for inclusive writing, the feminist and environmentalist politics which rallied the Nupes (New Union Popular Ecological and Social) made a vibrant speech to thank those who elected her deputy to the ninth district of Paris during the legislative elections of June 2022. During her speech, she made a grammatical error when she wanted to integrate women and men equally into her speech. A grammatical blunder that has not escaped many devotees of the French language such as the columnist and journalist Natacha Polony.
To celebrate her electoral victory in front of the cameras in Paris and in front of her campaign team, Sandrine Rousseau declared: “Congratulations to you for the wonderful campaign you have done and done! I can tell you that everyone talks to me about it.“However, this sentence, even if one respects the inclusive spelling, is false. Used with the auxiliary “avoir”, the past participle never agrees with its subject. However, the past participle agrees in gender and number with the direct object complement when it is placed before the verb. It would therefore have been necessary to limit oneself to saying: “The campaign that you did”, the COD being the singular feminine word “the campaign” .
