He transformed "The Tin Drum" into an Oscar-winning big screen success. Now film author Jean-Claude Carrière has died at the age of 89.

The French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière is dead. As his daughter Kiara Carrière is said to have confirmed to the French news agency AFP, the man of letters died on Monday (February 8) "while sleeping" in his apartment in Paris. He was 89 years old.

As a film author, Jean-Claude Carrière was responsible for a large number of successful screenplays. The script for Volker Schlöndorff's "Die Blechtrommel" (1978) sprang from his pen. The film was awarded an Oscar in 1980 for best foreign language film. His work "Van Gogh – On the Threshold of Eternity", published in 2018, also had Oscar hopes. Hollywood star Willem Dafoe (65) was nominated for best leading actor at the 2019 awards ceremony. In 2015, Carrière was also able to receive an honorary Oscar for his life's work.
