Project CARS 4 canceled, Electronic Arts shuts down Codemasters franchise

With franchises like DiRT, Grid, F1 and Project CARS in his portfolio, Codemasters was bought by Electronic Artswhich already has cult licenses like Burnout and Need for Speed. And while the series WRC will also pass under the bosom of Codemasters next year, it seemed obvious that all these sagas were not going to be able to coexist.

Electronic Arts just confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that he had just announced to Codemasterswho had acquired Slightly Mad Studios and its 150 employees in 2019, that Project CARS was not going to continue. The team currently working on a potential Project CARS 4 will thus be sent to other projects, whether racing games, titles EA Sports or other productions.

Today we internally announced an update to our racing games portfolio. Following an evaluation of the upcoming Project CARS title and its long-term growth potential, we have made the decision to discontinue development and investment in the franchise.

Decisions like these are very difficult, but allow us to focus on areas where we believe we have the best opportunity to create experiences that fans will love. We are focusing on our strengths in our racing game portfolio, particularly licensed intellectual properties and open-world experiences, and expanding our franchises to be more socially driven with long-term live services that will engage global communities. Video games are at the heart of automotive sports and entertainment, and with evolving fan expectations, we recognize the need to evolve our games beyond pure gaming, providing experiences for fans to watch, create and connect with their friends.

We’re working with everyone affected by this decision to place them in appropriate roles in our EA Sports and racing catalog, as well as other parts of EA, wherever we can. Our priority now is to provide as much support as possible to our employees through this transition.

Project CARS 3 should therefore be the last episode of the series: you can find it from €14.99 on Amazon.co.uk.
