Great-grandson of Louis XIV, Charles III of Bourbon reigned for a quarter of a century over the south of the Italian peninsula and Sicily until 1759, before becoming King of Spain. He had his palace built in the style of Versailles and that of the Escurial near Madrid, in a quiet location thirty kilometers north of the capital Naples. Initiated in 1752, the work continued for nearly a century. The 47,000m2 building designed by architect Luigi Vanvitelli embodies Italian Baroque with multiple European influences. The Palace of Caserta and its huge park have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
