If Netflix has just discreetly removed the Surprise Me feature, the streaming platform is making up for this loss with the addition this Thursday, March 9, 2023 of a tool that users have long requested.

Netflix finally lets you customize subtitles

Indeed, it is finally possible to customize subtitles on the streaming service’s TV app. Until then, this was only possible on the web version of Netflix. Now users can change at will the size, color, style but also the background of the subtitles (by adding a colored background for example).

It is possible to opt for three different sizes, namely small, medium and large. Convenient for those who are far from their TV set or who have difficulty reading small print. Moreover, in addition to the classic white color, Netflix therefore integrates three new style options with contrasting backgrounds, to make the text stand out more: Light (black text and white background), Drop Shadow (white text/black background) and Contrast (yellow text and black background).

An essential, yet belated update

Either way, this is a welcome update, especially considering that the vast majority of Netflix content is viewed on a TV (more than 70% according to a study published by the platform in 2018). In addition, another report carried out in 2019 showed that 80% of American users preferred to watch their Netflix series and films with subtitles, in particular for compensate for the poor audio quality offered by the platform.

At the same time, Netflix is finally catching up with competitors like Disney+, HBO Max or Amazon Prime Video, all of which offer similar adjustments to subtitles.

Please note, however, that it should be noted that these customization options are not available for some languages on Netflix. In this case, it will be impossible to enjoy it in Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Romanian and Thai.

As a reminder, paid account sharing on Netflix could land in France as early as March 2023. In France, this measure could take the form of a paying option up to a few euros and which would add to the list authorized users on your account up to two people.
