Venice – for tourists a romantic place of longing, for the residents increasingly a nightmare. Because more and more Venetians fear the demise of their city – but not from flooding. Authorities, markets and offices are closing, there is a lack of affordable housing. The city is being sold in slices – to tourists and investors. Many Venetians move to the mainland. But not everyone wants to watch this sinking idly, because a Venice without Venetians would lose its soul.
