A study, but … – VW ID.Xtreme: Off-road ID.4 could go into series production

The thought of a real off-road vehicle is certainly not the first thing you see when you see a VW ID.4. And yet Volkswagen has now converted one example into a veritable off-roader: it’s higher, wider and more powerful. And a nice test balloon for a possible series production.

For the time being, the VW ID.Xtreme – as they call the finger exercise – is just a surprise guest at the factory-sponsored ID meeting in Locarno. It is based on the VW ID.4 GTX and is intended to combine the strengths of a good SUV with the adventurous spirit of a robust off-roader. A performance drive on the rear axle and software adjustments to the drive control unit increase the system performance of the concept vehicle by 65 kW compared to the ID.4 GTX to 285 kW/387 hp – i.e. by almost 30 percent. In addition, the VW ID.Xtreme comes with a raised rally chassis, 18-inch off-road wheels, a modified crash carrier with an additional front bumper and fenders that are 50 millimeters wider 3D printing were made. The roof rack with additional LED lighting and the completely closed aluminum underbody equip the all-electric all-wheel drive vehicle for trips off the beaten track. Acoustically, the ID. Xtreme has something special to offer: there is a sound generator in the wheel arch that emits a special driving noise to the outside. In the interior there are numerous Alcantara applications, modified seats and elements in the accent color orange. For reasons of sustainability, a disused test vehicle from series development and a used 82 kWh battery were used as the basis for the concept vehicle. Is this thing going into series production now? Maybe. The decision should be based on the feedback that is now coming from the fans.
