a superhero bank clerk against an artificial intelligence

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – MUST SEE

From afar, Free Guy looks like a superhero movie parody. It is signed by Shawn Levy, Montrealer by birth passed to the Anglo-Hollywood enemy, author of the successful trilogy Night at the Museum and producer of the excellent series Stranger Things. What presages, at first glance, a certain moment of relaxation at the cinema. It will, but with some moderation. As in the recent and almost irregardable Space Jam. New era, the beginnings of Free Guy consist of an artificial intelligence which becomes aware of itself and revolts against the function assigned to it. In this case, Guy (played by Ryan “Deadpool” Reynolds) is the secondary character of a video game, Free City, a small, routine bank employee whose endlessly repeated journey consists of getting up in the morning, greeting everyone. happily in the street, then being held up at his workplace with his friend Buddy, the bank security guard.

Guy is, in reality, one of the many “non-playing characters” of this game which consists for its followers, through their freewheeling avatars, to exorcise their lowest instincts in this virtual world where permissiveness and violence reign. extremes, in particular exercised against these utilities that are the “non-player characters”. However, one fine morning, Guy discovers the tragic reality and, suddenly becoming a reflective being, sets out to change it. Interference then takes place between the game world and the real world, where, from the players to the game publisher, we end up realizing that an artificial intelligence is trying to change the game.

More perfect fantasy

But the real world itself is not devoid of violence. Thus, Antwan (played by Taika Waititi, also director of Thor. Ragnarok), the psychopathic and mercantile publisher of this game, has he purely and simply stolen it from his two young designers, Keys (Joe Keery, actor always full of grace escaped from Stranger Things) and Millie (Jodie Comer). The first, a programmer in the company of Antwan, and the second, a practitioner of the game under the avatar of the dreaded Molotovgirl, will seal a pact with Free Guy, now endowed with superpowers, so that he helps them find proof of this theft, carefully hidden in the bowels of the game. Alongside this interworld intrigue, Molotovgirl forms a romantic relationship with Free Guy, which does not leave Keys completely indifferent, who is himself secretly in love with his partner Millie.
