moving in 2023 or 2024, new address… The special boxes (completely) filled in

Have you moved in recent months? You will have to report your new address to the tax authorities. Furthermore, something new has appeared concerning the address of adults attached to the parents’ tax household.

In order to make data relating to taxpayers’ addresses more reliable, the tax authorities are introducing some new features during this 2024 campaign. First of all, by arranging the online income declaration processes. At the start of the process, on the civil status/address of the declaration screen, the user must indicate whether or not they have moved in 2023 or 2024, before continuing with their declaration, it is explained in the practical brochure of the Taxes. Then, the tax administration now requests provide the address of the attached adult children to their parents’ tax home.

Statement on the Internet: a change to report

From step 2 of the online declaration (Personal information), you can report a change of address to the tax administration, in the blue box at the bottom of the page, after the block concerning your marital status and the one displaying your address . You have two check boxes to choose from:

  • This address is not my address as of January 1, 2024 (because I moved in 2023): the Public Treasury then asks you to specify the date of the move, the new address, and information concerning the new accommodation (status of owner or tenant, number of rooms, name of any roommate, etc.). This information will be used in particular to calculate the amount of your property tax if you are concerned.
  • Or I moved in 2024: this only involves indicating your new address to the tax authorities to receive possible letters to your new home. You must complete it even if you have opted for paperless and therefore receive all the documents by email.

New for 2024: another address to inquire

In terms of address, the tax administration has added an element from the 2023 income declaration. From now on, if you attach one or more adult or married children to your tax household, you must provide the address (number, street, code postal and municipal) of the latter, if it is different from yours. This may, for example, be the case for young people who study or work in another city.

Paper declaration: return your old tax center

Are you one of the taxpayers unable to fulfill your reporting obligations online? In theory, if you have requested La Poste mail tracking, you will receive your pre-filled declaration by the end of April at the latest, despite the change of address. You must then return the completed document before midnight on Tuesday May 21 (see declaration deadlines), postmarked as proof.

Where? Don’t complicate things by looking for the tax center closest to your new home: you must return the declaration to the public finance center on which your domicile was based on January 1 of the tax year, January 1, 2023 therefore. More concretely, the address of the public finance center indicated on page 1 of the declaration.

As with the online declaration, be sure to report the move in the relevant box:

  • You changed your address in 2023. Also, in the paper form, you will need to indicate the date of the move. And specify what your address was on January 1, 2023, the tax authorities ask you to specify whether you are the owner, tenant, roommate or free accommodation. If you live in a building, specify the building, the staircase, the floor, the apartment number, the number of rooms, and if necessary the name of your roommate. In all cases, indicate the name of the owner.
  • or You changed your address in 2024. You will also need to indicate the date of the move, and complete your current address.

Are moving expenses deductible?

Moving obviously has a cost: purchase of boxes and packing materials, rental of a utility vehicle, gasoline or even page, or the services of a professional mover… But these costs can only be deducted from taxable income in a very specific situation: In the event of a compulsory change of residence to obtain a new job (excluding household relocation expenses), as specified by the tax administration in its 2024 brochure. It is therefore impossible to deduct furnishing costs or housing equipment.

A site to centralize the change of address

Good knowledge: a official site of the French administration allows you, free of charge, to save time in your procedures by indicating this change of address online to a series of organizations, public or not: tax service, Cnav, Agirc-Arrco, CPAM, CAF, EDF, Engie, Ple Emploi, service in charge of vehicle registration documents (SIV)… You can also report a change of email address, landline or mobile phone on this demarches.service-public.fr platform.
