Michael Bully Herbig is releasing a film inspired by the Relotius case with “A Thousand Lies” – a first look at media satire.

On September 29, 2022, “A Thousand Lines”, the new film by Michael Bully Herbig (54), will be in the cinemas. There is already a first glimpse of modern media satire in a first teaser trailer.

The plot of the film: The freelance journalist Juan Romero (Elyas M’Barek, 39) discovers inconsistencies in a cover story by star reporter Lars Bogenius (Jonas Nay, 31). With his research, he triggers a media scandal and jeopardizes his job, his reputation and his family.

The film was inspired by Juan Moreno’s (49) book “A Thousand Lines of Lies” and the case of Claas Relotius (36). The “Spiegel” reporter had convicted Relotius of lying in 2018 and thus uncovered the biggest counterfeiting scandal in German media history for decades.

“The facts are twisted so that it’s true in the end”

It remains to be seen how close the template and the film will come. Michael Bully Herbig announced: “Similarities with untrue events could happen coincidentally. But the facts are certainly twisted so that it’s true in the end!” The teaser also plays with the theme of the film in a similar way: Among other things, jubilant excerpts from reviews of various fictitious newspapers are shown.
