In Kentucky, a huge solar park is being built over a former coal mining area. The targeted output of 200 megawatts is twice as high as the solar park in Las Vegas built by the MGM Group and consisting of 323,000 panels.
The Martin County Solar Project is being built in eastern Kentucky and will be by far the largest facility in the US state. The operating company is Savion Energy based in Kansas City.
The facility will cover an area of 486 hectares and will cover much of the abandoned Martiki coal mine. As reported by the US portal PV Magazine, the majority of the laid-off miners are to be used to build the solar farm. Around 250 designers are needed. Eleven full-time positions will be created once construction is complete.
Construction will start in 2022. The operator expects the system to be completed in 2024. The expected electricity is intended to supply at least 33,000 households with electricity all year round.
