A young pregnant woman loses her baby and comes close to death at the CHU de Bordeaux

A tragedy occurred at the Bordeaux University Hospital last July. A young pregnant woman was close to death and lost her baby. She testifies.

The life of this young woman changed on July 20. Caroline Belfort, a 22-year-old young woman was close to death in the University Hospital of Bordeaux and has lost her seven month old baby. She recounts her ordeal in the columns of Figaro. Since birth, Caroline Belfort has had cystic fibrosis. On July 20, she felt very bad. And for good reason, the young woman 7 months pregnant suffers a sharp pain in the elbow, which is red and very swollen. She has A fever of 39°C and fainted about thirty times during the day.

A very worrying state of health which therefore pushes her to call the firefighters. But after examining it, they refuse to take her to the emergency room. “They didn’t listen to me. In the truck, they were like, ‘Ma’am, you just have swelling in your elbow. It might be a mosquito bite. You’re not going to lose your baby,'” says Caroline Belfort. His mother therefore decides to take him to the maternity ward of the CHU de Bordeaux. In fact, the pregnant woman wishes to induce her delivery because she feels that her baby is no longer moving in her womb.

But the doctors refuse to induce the delivery. After an examination, the doctor believes that the baby’s heart naturally slowed due to mom’s fever. Concerning her elbow, Caroline Belfort is sent to the emergency room of Pellegrin. But the service does not agree to take charge of her and sends her back to the Bordeaux Nord polyclinic. After having waited for long hours in vain, she was finally sent to Haillan, about twenty minutes from Bordeaux.

But there again, the emergency doctor refuses to take care of her. “He said: ‘I don’t know her file, I prefer that she be sent back to Pellegrin where she is followed because if she gives birth here or loses her baby, I would blame myself for life'”. Without knowing it, the young woman suffers of septic arthritis which will degenerate into sepsis. At two o’clock in the morning, the patient was finally treated at the Bordeaux University Hospital where she received an injection of morphine. His operation is scheduled for the next morning. “The rheumatologist who examined me had told me all the same that if it was not okay, he had to be called back at night. What I asked for, but the medical team refused”, regrets Caroline Belfort.

During her operation, the young woman suffered from sepsis. In mortal danger, the doctors must choose between saving the young woman or the baby, whose heart slows down dangerously. “By dint of waiting, they had to ask me who to save between my daughter and the baby. They had a 15% chance of saving Caroline. I chose her because she has a 15-month-old daughter.” testifies his mother. The young woman of 22 years has therefore lost her baby and was close to death. Despite the nightmare she experienced, she does not intend to file a complaint against the hospital, judging the steps too long and tedious.
