Sohail Ahmadi disappeared on August 19 in the chaos of the evacuation of Kabul airport, just after the Taliban came to power. Last week, the baby was reunited with part of his family. He should soon be reunited with his parents in the United States.

He had disappeared on August 19 in the chaos of the evacuation of the Kabul airport. Sohail Ahmadi was handed over to a foreign soldier near the tarmac in the Afghan capital following the resumption of power by the Islamist Taliban on August 15. This child has just been reunited with his family last week after almost five months of separation.

Picked up by a taxi driver

On August 15, two-month-old Sohail is separated from his father, who searches for him for three days at a crowded airport. This former security guard of the American embassy ends up flying without his baby towards the United States with his wife and four other children. It is Hamid Safi, a taxi driver, who finds him in tears, abandoned on the ground.

“I walked into the airport and saw a baby lying on the ground, in terrible shape. I looked around. I showed this child to lots of people, but no one knew him. J I called my wife and brought the child home. I bought him some milk. And since that day we have taken care of him, “he says.

Reuniting with his parents in the United States

Five months later, last week, Sohail’s family tracked down in Kabul, helped by social media and the police. The separation from his adoptive family is heartbreaking, but the laughing little boy with brown curls is in the care of his grandfather. He should be able to join his parents in the United States, where his mother did not sleep last night, her joy is immense.
