Bayern Munich fears for Manuel Neuer
Manuel Neuer injured himself in a punch with BVB striker Erling Haaland. The Bayern Munich keeper ended the Supercup game in Dortmund, but a few days later the pain became too great. Now his use in the next Bundesliga game is in danger.
He gave everything and bit his teeth in the Supercup. But now the pain was too great: Bayern Munich are worried about national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The 35-year-old goalkeeper is currently suspending with a capsule injury in his ankle and threatens to be canceled in the next Bundesliga game against 1.FC Cologne.
Neuer suffered the injury in the 3-1 success of the German soccer record champions in the Supercup at Borussia Dortmund. In the 66th minute of the game he had to undergo a brief treatment after a press blow with Dortmund’s star striker Erling Haaland, but was then able to end the game.
The goalkeeper was absent from training on Thursday and Bayern Munich left it open whether Neuer will be fit again by the next Bundesliga home game against 1.FC Cologne on Sunday. As the “Bild” reports, Neuer’s use should at least be in danger. The newspaper calls Neuer’s absence from training a “precautionary measure to protect himself”. His substitute, Sven Ulreich, would otherwise come to his first assignment after his guest appearance at the second division club Hamburger SV.
Before his one-year stint in the north of Germany, the former Stuttgart player had already made 70 appearances for Bayern Munich. He completed 47 of them in the 2017/2018 season, which Neuer largely missed due to a foot injury. At that time, the captain of the German national soccer team only reported back to the ultimately disastrous 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Neuer is under contract with Bayern Munich until June 2023. Before and after his metatarsal fracture in 2017, he was spared from protracted injuries. His designated Bayern successor Alexander Nübel fled before the current season and was loaned to Ligue 1 representative AS Monaco until 2023.
