Aleksander Kilde is doing “according to the circumstances” in the hospital in Innsbruck. His serious fall last Saturday in Wengen left its mark. The Norwegian did not break his lower leg as initially feared. Nevertheless, his injuries are serious. On Thursday evening he has to undergo another operation on his shoulder in Austria.

Kilde had, among other things, dislocated his shoulder during his departure. «When I was lying in the finish area in Wengen, all I could think about was my shoulder, which hurt incredibly. It was a pain I’ve never experienced before. I didn’t notice anything other than this pain at that moment,” said Kilde in an interview with the streaming platform on Wednesday Viaplay.

In addition to the damaged shoulder, Kilde suffered a deep cut on his leg. “The cut goes down to the bone. I got tangled in the safety net, cut my leg and lost a lot of blood. Some nerves were severely affected, but fortunately the motor nerves are still intact,” explained the 31-year-old speed specialist.

Quick comeback shelved

Kilde was cared for in the first few hours by his girlfriend Mikaela Shiffrin. The pictures of the two of them from the hospital room went around the world: “When I woke up in the evening, Mikaela was there. I spent the first 24 hours with her. That did me incredibly good.”

Nevertheless, Kilde has to prepare for a lengthy healing process. He said: “I had to shelve the idea of coming back quickly. But I’m a positive person and like challenges.” He accepts this “challenge”. But it is still too early to set a time horizon for the comeback, according to the overall World Cup winner of the 2019/20 season.
