The manufacturer claims that no other alloy could meet its needs.

The Cybertruck is still pending, but new more or less concrete information is reaching us, which seems to prove that Tesla engineers are working at full speed on its development.

An alloy that would meet the specifications

Tesla has set the bar very high for its new car. Beyond its original design, inspired by the film Blade Runner of the 80s, the monocoque of the Cybertruck must meet several objectives, including that of being very durable and very resistant, while being relatively light. If we pretty much already knew what alloy the body should be made of, namely cold-rolled 30X stainless steel, the manufacturer has just filed a patent which could give us a little more precision.

It describes an alloy similar to those already used in several sectors, including the automotive industry, and particularly 304L, 316L and 301, which all have specific characteristics, such as resistance to deformation, traction and corrosion. However, Tesla’s new steel is designed to outperform them in all of these areas, especially in corrosion resistance, which could eliminate the need to apply a specific coating for this purpose. Perfect for forming the exoskeleton of the device, designed to support it as a single block, but mostly supposed to come unpainted.

A vehicle still in the prototype state

Elon Musk’s company does not specify whether this steel will be used on the Cybertruck. However, given the specific features given to it, one can imagine that it meets the specific needs of the vehicle. Innovation is at the heart of this project, which is quite unusual on paper. It is therefore not surprising to see Tesla filing patents while its development is in full swing.

Although the series production of the vehicle has been delayed for another year, new information arrives regularly, such as the disclosure of its air suspensions. Which gives an increasingly comprehensive overview of what more than a million people have pre-ordered.
