After Florida, Hurricane Ian also made landfall in the US state of South Carolina. The hurricane hit the coast with wind speeds of around 140 kilometers per hour, as the US hurricane center announced on Twitter. Meteorologists warn of floods and storm surges that could be a good two meters high.
With the current winds, “Ian” corresponds to hurricane category one out of five. “Ian” made landfall in Cuba on Tuesday as a category three out of five hurricane. In the province of Pinar del Río, which was particularly hard hit, two people died after their houses collapsed, the Cuban government said.

Severe devastation in Florida
The hurricane made landfall on Wednesday as one of the strongest hurricanes in Florida history, causing violent winds, heavy rain, storm surges and flooding. With wind speeds of up to 240 kilometers per hour, the storm reached the west coast of the sunny state and was just below the threshold for the highest hurricane category. It left destruction and flooding in its wake across the southern state.
The storm flooded streets and buildings in Southwest Florida. More than 2.5 million people were temporarily without power during the night. Tens of thousands of fitters had previously been activated to repair power lines as quickly as possible. Power was restored to more than 350,000 as of Thursday, Florida’s governor said.
