After EU approval: Spahn open to vaccines from Russia and China

Spahn open to vaccine from Russia and China

The rapid release of the Russian vaccine Sputnik V sparked fierce criticism around the world. There were no important tests. Health Minister Spahn is still open to vaccines from Russia and China – on one condition.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn from the CDU is also open to the use of corona vaccines from Russia and China in Germany in the event of successful EU approval. "If a vaccine is safe and effective, regardless of the country in which it was manufactured, then it can of course help to cope with the pandemic," said Spahn of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung". Regular approval according to European law is decisive.

Russia had announced that it would be able to supply the EU with 100 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine in the second quarter. This would allow 50 million people to be vaccinated. An application for approval of the vaccine has already been submitted to the European Medicines Agency [EMA].

The active ingredient was the first in the world to be released for broad use in the population in mid-August, although important tests had passed by then. This triggered international criticism. No independent studies are known to date.
