Abrupt end of the Junior World Championship in ice hockey: After 3 games have been canceled, the association pulls the rip cord.

The U20 World Cup for ice hockey in the Canadian cities of Red Deer and Edmonton has been canceled after Corona cases in three teams and the resulting forfait defeats. The disaster had loomed: On Tuesday, corona cases in the USA meant that Switzerland won their second preliminary round match 1-0 forfait. The day after, the Czech and Russian players also tested positive. They too lost their games 0-1 forfait and, like the Americans, had to go into quarantine.

In order to protect the health of all participants, the tournament will be canceled, said the international association IIHF. With three forfait defeats in the last four games and three teams that had to go into quarantine for an indefinite period of time, the continuation of the tournament under fair conditions would not have been possible anyway. Switzerland will return home after just one game. At the start, Marco Bayer’s team lost 4-2 to Russia.

“From our point of view, the demolition is the right decision,” said Lars Weibel, who is responsible for the Swiss national teams. “The current situation and recent developments in the pandemic simply no longer allow normal implementation.”
