The Philadelphia Flyers have signed Russian goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov – under extraordinary conditions.

The transfer took place in the style of the Cold War in the utmost secrecy: Russian goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov is now playing for the Philadelphia Flyers. His contract with CSKA Moscow was only terminated on Thursday.

The 27-year-old should have played for the NHL franchise long ago. Drafted 9 years ago, the 1.98 meter man signed a contract with Philadelphia in 2022.

Banished to the Arctic

But the Russian authorities accused him – a few weeks after the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine – of trying to escape military service. Fedotov was drafted and shipped to a remote base in the Arctic, where he served for a year.

He then signed with CSKA Moscow, possibly out of fear of further harassment – and was banned internationally because the world association IIHF viewed this as a breach of contract with Philadelphia. “It was two very difficult years,” said Fedotow. «Now I’m happy to be here. I hope it’s for a long time together.”
