- After the earthquake in Japan on New Year’s Day, the death toll recovered has risen to over 100. Officially, 110 deaths have now been registered, as the government of Ishikawa Prefecture told the Kyodo news agency.
- Rescue teams are still searching for survivors under the rubble; 211 people are still missing.
- On Saturday morning there was another earthquake of magnitude 5.3 in Ishikawa Prefecture.
On Saturday, 16 more bodies were recovered in the cities of Wajima and Anamizu, the government of Ishikawa Prefecture announced, according to the Kyodo news agency.
Rescue teams continued to search for survivors under the rubble of collapsed houses. Numerous buildings and roads were destroyed, which also made it difficult to deliver relief supplies to the affected areas. The situation is also complicated by rain and expected snowfall.
Emergency supply damaged
A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula on the west coast of Japan on New Year’s Day. Power has been restored along the coast, but water supplies are still critical. According to news agencies, emergency water supplies are also damaged.
The newspaper “Yomiuri” reports that after the earthquake, over 100 landslides were detected in aerial photographs. Some of them blocked vital road connections.
