No, the fact that AI eliminates jobs is not a myth, but rather an almost obvious future reality, as confirmed by the director of the International Monetary Fund Kristalina Georgieva. And the consequences could be disastrous for developing countries.

This is one of the most important concerns linked to the global democratization of AI at all levels of society: what if we ended up being replaced by artificial intelligence in our work? This very real concern could materialize on a global scale in the years to come, and the head of the IMF, interviewed on this subject forAFPis rather pessimistic about the future of the world of employment.

The IMF warns about employment in the face of the expansion of AI in the professional world

An IMF report published a few days ago shows a worrying development for employment in the world, threatened by artificial intelligence. In an interview given to theAFP, the head of the institution discusses in detail the most significant data to be drawn from this report. It indicates that 40% of jobs worldwide should be affected by the democratization of AI. This could reach up to 60% of jobs in the most advanced or emerging countries: “ the more skilled a job you have, the more AI will be present “, thus indicates Kristalina Georgieva.

According to the report, certain countries would be better equipped to adapt to the new paradigm: the USA, Canada and Singapore are the most prepared. In France, layoffs linked to AI are not yet really substantial, but it is only a matter of time, since certain companies are already showing a certain attraction to these new technologies. This is particularly the case of the firm Onclusive, specialized in media monitoring, which announced last week that it wanted to introduce “ new technologies and new tools » by betting on “ the contribution of artificial intelligence ». Result: a plan to eliminate more than 200 positions.

Growing inequalities in the face of this new actor

According to this same report, artificial intelligence could create new wage inequalities, with a particular effect on the middle classes. Employees benefiting from high incomes could, on the contrary, increase their income by taking advantage of the productivity gain brought about by the use of AI. In addition to inequalities between working classes, they could also be articulated between countries: countries with lower incomes could in fact suffer a drop in competitiveness in the face of competitors more focused on this revolutionary technological contribution.

We have to move quickly, their [N.D.L.R. : les pays à moindre revenus] allow you to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the IEA. The question will be to put aside fears about AI in order to focus on ways to get the best possible benefit from it, for everyone,” the head of the IMF was thus able to conclude in her interview.

One thing seems certain: the world of work is currently undergoing a real paradigm shift, to which we will have to adapt in the years to come. Even if it means completely rethinking employment throughout the world…
