Airbus: understanding ‘space weather’ with the SMILE mission

(CercleFinance.com) – Airbus announces that the payload for the SMILE mission (Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) has successfully passed the Delivery Review Board (DRB). After passing through Luxembourg, it will then leave for Shanghai where it will be integrated into the Chinese platform at the beginning of April.

SMILE is the first joint European and Chinese mission. It aims to study the magnetic environment of the Earth (magnetosphere) on a global scale, in order to better understand the Sun-Earth interaction, an interaction also known as ‘space weather’.

Once the satellite is completed, it will undergo a full five-month qualification test campaign.

The mission is scheduled to launch in late 2024 or early 2025 from the European spaceport of Kourou. The SMILE mission will last three years and will build on the results and studies of ESA satellites such as Cluster and XMM-Newton, also built by Airbus.
