Alarming analysis – Vorarlberg’s soil is slowly becoming scarce

The WWF has presented a current analysis of soil damage in Austria. Frightening: Vorarlberg has already built up 30 percent of the area that can be used for settlement purposes and agriculture. And the ground is still being sealed.

Anyone who goes on a short tour through Vorarlberg will not be able to avoid discovering that more and more soil is being sealed. There is a warehouse, there is a block of flats – and of course lots of streets. As the WWF shows in a current analysis, soil consumption is taking on frightening proportions throughout Austria.

Since the turn of the millennium, land consumption has grown almost three times as fast as the population. A third of the land consumption is due to the road network. The WWF analysis shows that all federal states are still a long way from sustainable land use. Vorarlberg has already built 30 percent of the land that can be used for agriculture and settlement purposes.

Before that, only Vienna lies with 79 percent. The WWF calls for a binding soil protection contract for all of Austria.
