Hollywood star Alec Baldwin is being charged again over the tragedy on the “Rust” set. That’s when camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was killed.

According to US media reports, Alec Baldwin (65) has been charged with negligent homicide. Background: In October 2021, camerawoman Halyna Hutchins (1979-2021) died on the film set of the western “Rust”. A prop weapon that Baldwin held during a rehearsal was apparently loaded with live ammunition and went off – how this could have happened is still unclear.

Did Baldwin pull the trigger or not?

A grand jury in Santa Fe, New Mexico, indicted Baldwin on Friday (January 19). In spring 2023, special investigators initially rejected charges against Baldwin. The 65-year-old, who co-produced and starred in the film, said he did not pull the trigger of the gun during the rehearsal. At that time, however, a statement from the investigating authority said that they reserved the right to charge Alec Baldwin again if new facts emerged. In mid-August, another weapons report in the case apparently came to the conclusion that, contrary to his claims, the actor actually pulled the trigger.

According to the New York Times newspaper Alec Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison with the new charge. The actor denies the allegations. “We look forward to our day in court,” Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, said in a statement, according to the report.

Civil lawsuits are also ongoing

There are also said to be civil lawsuits against Alec Baldwin and other producers of the film, including from members of the “Rust” crew. However, according to US media reports, the judges have put these proceedings on hold until the criminal case is concluded.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for the weapons on the “Rust” set, was also previously charged with involuntary manslaughter. Her trial is scheduled for February.
