“Compulsory vaccination still makes sense even with a high quota”

A vaccination requirement can be introduced even if the vaccination rate is high, says Ethics Council boss Alena Buyx. However, it cannot be ruled out that politicians will make a justified U-turn on the subject.

The chairman of the German Ethics Council, Alena Buyx, believes that a general vaccination requirement would make sense even if the vaccination rate in Germany should rise significantly. According to experts, you have to assume that you need “very high vaccination rates” to finally defeat the pandemic, Buyx said in the “early start” at ntv.

The Ethics Council had already expressed this opinion with a view to the Delta variant, said Buyx and added: “But with Omikron this may be even more true because it is just so incredibly contagious.”

Compulsory vaccination makes sense as long as there is a risk that “the basic rights of millions of people will be restricted by the measures”. Nevertheless, the compulsory vaccination is still only “a last resort”, which must always be very well justified.

But Buyx did not rule out that politicians might come to a different opinion on the subject in the end: “Of course they could. If they investigate and come to this conclusion on the basis of careful consideration and the state of affairs shows that. ” Buyx added: “If we can do without, then we don’t need to be vaccinated.”

“Then the measures must fall”

With a view to the current corona measures and a possible end to the pandemic, Buyx said that everyone was hoping that a “controlled endemic situation” will soon be achieved. Although this is still a situation in which people still get sick or even die, “this is at a level that does not lead to our hospitals becoming overloaded or to having to think about closing things again,” says Buyx.

Rather, this is then “part of the so-called general life risk”. In such a situation, “the measures must be taken,” said Buyx. However, it is difficult to predict when this situation will be reached.
