Alexandre Martin: a series of tributes to the brigadier killed in Mali


Died in Mali on Saturday after an attack on the French base in Gao, Brigadier Alexandre Martin will receive three successive tributes, in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) and Paris this Wednesday, then in Hyères (Var) this Thursday, January 27.

Originally from Rouen, the 24-year-old French soldier, deployed in Mali as part of Operation Barkhane, was killed on Saturday January 22 by mortar shell fire targeting the large French military base in Gao. Nine other soldiers were lightly injured in the attack.

The military funeral honors will be returned today to the soldier of the 54th artillery regiment of Hyères (Var). The funeral procession will take the Pont Alexandre III, in Paris, from 5:15 p.m. before joining the main courtyard of the Hôtel National des Invalides for the start of the ceremony set at 5:30 p.m. in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the army. land, Army General Pierre Schill.

A first tribute was paid this Wednesday morning, from 11 a.m., in Rennes, in front of the war memorial located on the place of the National Order of Merit. Several veterans laid a wreath during the ceremony, before the reading of a text in honor of the brigadier.

A final tribute to the Nation ceremony will take place this Thursday, from 6.45 p.m., in Hyères, under the chairmanship of the Minister for the Armed Forces, Florence Parly.

Private Alexandre Martin is the 53rd French soldier killed in the Sahel since 2013.
