Alexis Tsipras leaves the leadership of the Greek party Syriza

Athens, June 29 (Reuters) – Greek politician Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday he was stepping down as leader of the left-wing Syriza party following its defeat in Sunday’s election.

“The time has come to start a new cycle,” Alexis Tsipras told television, adding that a reform of Syriza was needed.

“Our defeat can – and should – be the starting point for this new cycle.” (Athens office report, French version Corentin Chapron, edited by Kate Entringer)
