Several hundred employees work for Queen Elizabeth and her family. A look behind the palace walls is extremely rare. In an article for Telegraph, Alicia Healey recalls her time serving the Royal Family.

There are always job advertisements on the Royal Family website. No wonder, “The Firm” is a huge company that operates and maintains. In addition, the historical buildings, some of which are inhabited by family members, have to be maintained. Alicia Healey, ex-employee at Buckingham Palace, wrote for telegraph.co.uk what it’s really like to work for Queen Elizabeth, 95, and Co.

From dusting priceless works of art to scrubbing the royal toilet

Alicia Healey got her job at Buckingham Palace by chance, she writes. After studying art history, she was looking for a job and had numerous job interviews. But she wasn’t really interested in any of the offers. The advertisement for a summer job on Balmoral, however, aroused her interest, after all, she had always been interested in historical buildings. At first she didn’t think about who she would work for at Balmoral. In her interview, Alicia was then informed that the job would not only be about work, but also about pleasure. As an employee, she would have the opportunity to attend balls and special celebrations. One event in particular stayed in the back of her mind.

Alicia danced with Prince Philip

Alicia remembers her four years in the service of the British Royal Family with a smile on her face. After all, she was allowed to take on a particularly honorable task during this time, which would open the doors for further jobs for her, of which she was always aware. “In Windsor, Sandringham and Balmoral, I was more of a traditional housemaid doing chores that hadn’t changed much since Queen Victoria’s time,” she recalls in her article for telegraph.co.uk. “I felt a bit like a time traveler and enjoyed the uniqueness of the task.” One event that made a particularly lasting impression on her during her time with the Royal Family was a dance with Prince Philip, † 99, who died in April. “An off-duty high point was dancing a waltz with the Duke of Edinburgh at the Ghillies Ball at Balmoral Castle – a memory that is particularly moving today,” Alicia said.

A summer job turned into four years, which Alicia spent in the service of the British royal family.
