Amazon, Booking, La Poste: 1 million telephone records in the hands of hackers

A database containing telephone calls from more than a million French people has been put up for sale. The source of the leak is said to be 118412, a telephone information company.

A hacker has put online a vast database, containing records of phone calls made to more than a million French people. The announcement was posted on a famous forum frequented by hackers, on March 12, 2023, and was spotted by Julien Métayer, cybersecurity expert, also known under the pseudonym of “Kermit” in the middle. He was able to consult the files concerned and confirms the presence of calls made to individuals.

Beyond phone numbers, a lot of other information can be heard in the recordings, ” such as authentication credentials », specifies Julien Métayer. A free sample of 100 recordings was already online to legitimize the leak. Those concerned are more likely to be harassed by scams in the coming months. The criminal demanded 3,500 euros in cryptocurrency for the entire database.

Calls made for information

The ad was taken down on March 13, barely 24 hours after it was posted. Audio file leaks are quite rare on these forums. The files were probably sold, or the hacker changed his mind.

Julien Metayer was able to establish a list of companies cited in these recordings : Company 0044, Amazon, Apple Assistance, PlayStation, Banque Postale, Booking.com, Canal+, Clinique, Maison Fleury, Coriolis Telecom, Crédit Agricole, electronic payment center Edream, FoliaTeam, Free, G7 Taxi, Ibéria, La Poste, Laboratoire BioGroup, ManoMano, N26, Nickel Bank, Oney Opodo, Orange, OuiGo SNCF, Rakuten, RegloMobile, SFR, SNCF, UPS, Urgence Veterinaire Bordeaux.

How could a database contain recorded calls linked to so many large groups? After an investigation by the Banque Postale, it would be a leak from 118412, a private paying telephone information service. ” Their number appears in 99% of cases “, informs us the expert in cybersecurity. This company is responsible for providing telephone information on an individual or a company that a user would like to contact quickly.

This leak recalls the dangers of recorded calls made to companies. Victims unfortunately cannot do much. As for the companies, they can still notify customers of the leak.
