In an urgent email sent to its British customers, Amazon warns of an upsurge in bank data scams. Scams that can be costly, as criminals resort to ever more creative methods to access Internet users’ accounts and means of payment.

Are you a regular Amazon customer? You would do well to take into account the advice that the online sales giant has just reminded its customers in a prevention message.

Ever more inventive scams, ever greater risks

To get hold of your account information, scammers are constantly increasing their creativity, as Amazon points out in the email sent to its UK customers on July 31, 2023. Emails, texts and even phone calls: scammers use all kinds of methods to achieve their ends.

Whatever the medium used, a common denominator comes back: the scammer, pretending to be Amazon, mentions membership fees that have not been paid, a subscription problem with your Prime account… The goal: you convince them to provide payment information or bank details.

Another recurring element is reported by Amazon: the notion of urgency. You are warned that your account will be suspended or terminated shortly unless you act quickly, creating a false sense of urgency that prompts you to act without thinking.

Prevention rules to follow to avoid cyberattacks

In this same e-mail, the firm of Jeff Bezos recalls that the company will never ask its customers to disclose their password or their sensitive personal information by telephone, or on a site other than Amazon.

It also recalls several essential rules in terms of cybersecurity:

  • Always make sure to navigate to official Amazon sites and applications, when placing an order such as to contact customer service, technical support, or modify account information;
  • Be wary of urgent orders;
  • Never pay over the phone, and in general, verify the legitimacy of any email or phone call before providing any personal information.

If the scams seem to be concentrated in the United Kingdom, these preventive measures remain a good reflex to have in mind for French customers as well. To protect against these ever-evolving threats, constant attention and vigilance are required.
