Amazon Prime Video: Class action lawsuit over advertising in the stream program – will you get your money back now?

Amazon Prime Video’s decision to simply show advertising in the streaming program angers not only subscribers, but also consumer advice centers. Now comes the second lawsuit, from which you can also benefit.

On February 5, 2024 it suddenly appeared, the advertising in the Amazon Prime Video program. Although “suddenly” is not entirely correct in this case, Amazon informed subscribers in advance about this change, which amounts to a loss in the value of the previous subscription, and also pointed out the possibility of removing the advertising again for 2.99 euros per month to banish the streams.

But since Prime users were only informed here and did not have the chance to agree to or reject this change, Amazon has already received a lawsuit from the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations. Subscribers who were not satisfied with the advertising simply canceled their subscription – or bit the bullet and paid the new surcharge for the ad-free subscription.

But now there is another way to take action against Amazon’s actions. The Saxony consumer advice center is planning a class action lawsuit with which subscribers can get some of their money back in the long term.

Now patience is required

It is not yet possible to participate in the class action lawsuit; registration is expected to take place from April 2024. In the opinion of the Saxony Consumer Center, Amazon’s introduction of advertising was unlawful. Legal expert Michael Hummel says: “The whole thing was simply communicated to the customers by email in the landlord style, without obtaining consent. It doesn’t work that way!”

Anyone who takes part in the lawsuit, if successful in court, would not receive the entire subscription cost back, but only a partial amount that corresponds to the surcharge for the ad-free subscription.

We are talking about around 36 euros per year. Over a period of several years, this can be well worth it. We expect the process to take several years […].

The advantage of such a class action lawsuit is, of course, that subscribers can get their money back in a very uncomplicated way or at least have little to lose if Amazon prevails in court. After all, as a private individual you would hardly go to court alone for just under 36 euros.

When asked, the Saxony Consumer Center confirmed to us that the class action lawsuit is aimed at all Amazon Prime Video subscribers and not just those who now pay 2.99 euros per month for an ad-free subscription. Netzwelt will inform you as soon as you can take part in the class action lawsuit.
