Two days before the deadline, Amazon finally backed down. The American giant has announced that it will not ban the use of Visa credit cards on its site in the United Kingdom. Initially, this threat was to take effect on January 19. But in an email sent to its customers, the world leader in e-commerce indicated that it was working in “close cooperation” with Visa to enable its customers to “continue to use their Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk”.
Last November, Amazon had shown its desire to do without Visa services across the Channel, the Seattle behemoth then denouncing the “high fees” levied by Visa on transactions carried out with the American payment giant’s credit cards. If the hegemony of Visa and Mastercard seems more and more contested, it remains for the moment very difficult to break away from it.
