Because a few weeks before the launch of RDNA 3 cards, AMD needs to assert itself against the most recent NVIDIA solutions.

Two days before the launch of the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card, AMD was unable to directly compare the performance of its future Radeon RX 7900s with the newcomer from NVIDIA… but for everything else, it gave it a go with joy.

Smaller, more sober cards…

In mid-December, the Radeon RX 7900XTX and RX 7900XT will be released, cards based on the third generation of AMD’s RDNA architecture. Rather than competing with NVIDIA on performance alone, AMD wants to prove that the price/quality ratio is in its favour.

In fact, there is no question of comparing the Radeons to the all-powerful GeForce RTX 4090 and it is therefore the RTX 4080 – which is scheduled for release in two days – which is targeted. AMD first insists on the fact that its cards are more compact.

Indeed, while the RTX 4080 should be over 30 centimeters long, the Radeon RXs are 28.7 and 26.7 cm respectively. In addition, they occupy 2.5 PCIe slots against 3 for the NVIDIA card. Finally, AMD has a great game of emphasizing the power supply of its cards.

Lisa Su’s company insists on the presence of two 8-pin connectors and on the fact that its Radeon RXs do not require a power adapter.

… but above all significantly cheaper!

In the absence of being able to present the slightest comparison of performance between its cards and the GeForce RTX 4080, AMD emphasizes everything relating to official features. Logically, support for DisplayPort 2.1 is highlighted.

This should pave the way for wider image definitions while maintaining very high image refresh rates, whereas the GeForces are content with DisplayPort 1.4. In addition, AMD has the good idea to bring back the USB-C port which can pass the DisplayPort signal.

Through a few slides, AMD insists on the amount of onboard memory – in favor of its 24/20 GB cards against 16 GB on the RTX 4080 – as well as on the interface bus: at 384/320-bit against 256 -bit, it is also to the advantage of the Radeon RX. On the other hand, AMD is careful not to specify that NVIDIA’s GDDR6X is faster.

Still, as AMD’s latest slide points out, its Radeon RX 7900XTX and RX 7900XT have a real advantage to show: their recommended price significantly lower than that of the RTX 4080. We’re talking about 999 and 899 dollars here against 1,199 dollars for the NVIDIA card, knowing that the partner models should be more than 1,400 euros.

Keep in mind that the Radeon RXs are still a good month away from their official launch. Things have plenty of time to change, but if AMD manages to maintain good availability and lower prices than its competitor, it clearly has a (graphics) card to play.
