AMD has apparently not yet written off the Ryzen Threadripper 5000 processor series – at least as far as the Pro series for workstations is concerned. Five models from the 12-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5945WX to the 64-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX are expected to appear on March 8, 2022.
The website reports Videocardz citing own sources. The two processors mentioned above appeared in benchmark databases months ago, but AMD has not yet made an announcement. The previous series Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3000 appeared in July 2020, the non-Pro CPUs in early 2020.
The Pro models use the more expensive WRX80 platform instead of TRX40 motherboards. Instead of four memory channels (quad-channel) there are eight (octa-channel), and the processors also provide 128 instead of 64 PCI Express 4.0 lanes for graphics cards and accelerators. Ryzen Threadripper Pro focuses even more on workstations – the few available WRX80 mainboards cost at least 860 euros. There are no rumors about Ryzen Threadripper 5000 (not Pro).
Better late than never
Like the desktop series Ryzen 5000, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 use Zen 3 computing cores. If the workstation CPUs appear in March 2022, there would be 1.5 years between the ideas of both series. At that point in time, the Zen 4-16 kernels with the new AM5 desktop platform, including PCI Express 5.0 and DDR5 RAM, are already approaching.
Intel offers the Xeon series W-3300 (Ice Lake, 10 nanometers) for workstations. With a maximum of 38 CPU cores, however, AMD hardly has any pressure to renew its own workstation range.
