AMD will still source from GlobalFoundries (a company it had sold several years ago) 12 and 14 nm to make the I / O chips for its processors.
The two companies had already signed an agreement to supply wafers (silicon wafers) in May 2021 for $ 1.6 billion over the period 2022/2024. Just over six months later, in December, the two sides opted to extend the deal until 2025, bringing the total bill to $ 2.1 billion. The price of wafers would have been renegotiated, but it is impossible to say whether AMD had to pay more to secure its supply or, Conversely, if a better price has been granted.
The 12 and 14 nm chips have been used for a while by AMD and this process is starting to date somewhat, but this new order could mean that the manufacturer will continue to use them for its next generations of Vermeer and Raphael processors (the Ryzen 6000 and 7000). Please note, as we have indicated, these are not the chips containing the Zen cores of the processors, but chips dedicated to the management of these cores (I / O chips) and motherboard chipsets.
