Lemke does not want to sacrifice the environment for housing
The Ampel-Coalition wants to create hundreds of thousands of apartments – every year. Environment Minister Lemke, however, warns of the destruction of the environment by too much new construction. You want to use empty buildings. In addition, houses need more planted roofs and facades.
Environment Minister Steffi Lemke has warned against the destruction of nature in the planned housing construction. “It cannot be about sealing green spaces in the cities,” said the Green politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group. “We should concentrate on areas that are not so important for species protection.” In its coalition agreement, the traffic light government agreed to create 400,000 apartments a year.
Lemke also advised against “handling everything via new buildings”. Instead, one could “think about better usage concepts for vacant houses, including commercial buildings, which exist in many rural areas – often with good rail connections to the city.” In addition, building must be different than before, with green roofs and facades as well as “more homes for building breeders and more attention to prevent bird strikes on the window fronts”.

Building Minister Klara Geywitz has to watch as she wants to build the 400,000 apartments annually that the traffic light parties had agreed in the coalition agreement. Environment Minister Lemke admits that to the Funke newspapers.
“We need more residential construction, I agree. But I hope that this government manages to take biodiversity into account more than it has been up to now. And of course we have to build differently: green roofs, green facades, more Home for building nesters and more attention to prevent bird strikes on the window fronts.
