Amphibians on the move – toads & co. “conquer” the local streets

Attention, attention: the toads are on the loose! At the start of the annual amphibian hike, numerous volunteers are once again working tirelessly to guide frogs, newts, etc. safely across the road.

Just in time for the start of spring, the amphibians migrate to their spawning waters for six weeks to provide for offspring. The dangers lurk primarily on our roads. Therefore, as part of the Nature Conservation Association’s protection project, more than 330 volunteers look after around 150 hiking routes. The many buried collection buckets along the protective fences are checked every day. “Road traffic is largely responsible for the fact that all amphibian species in this country are on the red list of endangered species,” says Margit Gross, head of the Nature Conservation Association, now warning drivers to be more careful.
